When Patrons Lead to Partners
Patrons are members of the Helium Network that have deployed over 15 Helium Hotspots to build widespread coverage in their cities and target markets. To date, hundreds of Patrons are active on The People’s Network and it’s safe to say we would not be the largest LoRaWAN Network in North America without them.
Often, on top of coverage, Patrons also bring sensor deployment opportunities to the Network, and have worked with Helium and our partners to build out the connectivity these companies need to succeed. They build coverage with the help of friends and family, and their extended network, each employing their own individual models to expand their coverage footprint (whether it be $HNT splits or covering the cost of their monthly Netflix or internet bill).
Sometimes Patrons encourage their entrepreneurial family members to build things for The People’s Network, and those family members develop a business that solves an important problem at an extremely reasonable cost. That’s the story of NOWI, which started when one of our first Patrons introduced his family to The People’s Network.
Monitoring Water Waste on The People’s Network
Developed exclusively for The People’s Network, NOWI is identifying leaks and eliminating water waste with smart water meters that display all the data property owners need on a simple dashboard, and send real-time alerts to their phones or emails whenever a leak or abnormal water usage is detected.
Leaks can waste nearly 10,000 gallons of water per household, per year. Just the cost of a leaking toilet valve can cost $150 per month, a stuck valve can cost $40 per day, and NOWI wants to ensure that property owners can identify leakage and irregular usage before long-term damage takes place.
“For us, choosing the Helium network was a no brainer. We needed a network on which we could run battery-powered devices for years, is inexpensive, ubiquitous, and can reach into areas like basements where signal attenuation is high. Helium was the only network that checked all of those boxes.” — Jim Fayal, Co-Founder, NOWI
