McDonald’s, the world’s largest fast-food chain, has filed several applications related to metaverse-focused ‘virtual restaurants’, trademark attorney Josh Bergen was the first to reveal the news Wednesday.
As per the trademark applications filed to the US Patent and Trademark Office, McDonald’s aims to offer services like “operating a virtual restaurant featuring actual and virtual goods” and “operating a virtual restaurant online featuring home delivery”.
McDonald’s is headed to the metaverse.

In addition, the burger giant mentioned products “virtual food and beverage products” as well as entertainment services featuring on-line actual and virtual concerts and other events in its filings. Its virtual restaurant(s) might also provide “downloadable multimedia files containing artwork, text, audio and video files and non-fungible tokens.”
Headquartered in Chicago, McDonald’s is currently the world’s largest fast-food chain with more than 39,198 in over 100 countries across the world. With its latest move, McDonald’s has joined the likes of Nike, Walmart, Puma, Panera Bread, and other top brands that filed similar applications in the past few months.
Trademark attorney Josh Bergen told Forbes:
“When you see this critical mass of large companies making this many new trademark filings, it’s very clear this is coming. I think you’re going to see every brand that you can think of make these filings within the next 12 months. I don’t think anyone wants to be the next Blockbuster and just completely ignore a new technology that’s coming.”
While trademark applications take about eight to nine months to review, Gerben noted that neither Panera Bread nor McDonald’s will have issues in getting approval on their filings.
